My 3 Submissions
“So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?” -Hunter S. Thompson
Yikes!! Finally getting around to making time to get this post in. What a fantastic project!!! Thanks to all who participated, Shannon and I were extremely pleased with the turn out and amount of creativity that went on over the last couple of weeks. We plan on having the gallery up by the weekend 🙂
Now onto my thoughts and process with the quotes I was given!
I approached my first quote (above) with some early inspiration on a water theme. The imagery in my mind, when reading the quote, was so strong that I couldn’t picture going any other direction. I began to struggle as I searched for an “appropriate” vessel to sell my original thought. Living about 45 min from the water front I wasn’t finding to many boats around my area and wasn’t heading to the water front anytime soon. I quickly began searching for an alternate solution to the idea.
It wasn’t until watching the movie “The Perfect Storm” last week that I found my final inspiration for the pic. The movie reminded me of the Fishing Captain statue that is literally right down the street from where I live (As the next quote suggests, sometimes we miss the easiest solutions). The statue worked perfect, as it has plenty of splits in the wood and faded paint suggesting braving the many storms that has come its way. To spice the scene I added some creases and some wear and age as if its been a folded photo that gets carried in pride, to show how he overcame the storms and battled through life’s many obstacles.
I loved this quote by the way, because its true the happier man is the one who goes out and braves the battles and storms of life and truly lives. I don’t ever want to fall into the category of merely existing.
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” Dr Seuss
This was definitely the most difficult for me to come up with a great pic for, which is ironic given the context of the quote. My initial thought process when to trying to figure out a complicated question with a simple answer. I was google searching a little bit of everything trying to come up with a picture worthy idea.
It wasn’t until a couple nights before deadline while saying my nights prayer, that I realized the simple answer to my difficult question! Its actually quite funny because only a few weeks ago I posted a pic on my personal facebook page saying “Dont stress, look up to god, hand it back to him, and he will turn it all around.”. Fantastically simple idea, and a photo that I ended up getting really pumped up about.
“I don’t know the question, but sex is definitely the answer.” Woody Allen
If the last photo was the most difficult, then this one was definitely the most interesting! When I seen that I had gotten this quote I about died laughing. How in the world would I do this shot in a tastefully funny way that wouldn’t completely destroy my reputation with my community haha. I immediately put out a casting call on facebook for a bed to use over the weekend… which as you can probably guess was received in a very awkward way by most. I had to fess up that yes indeed it was very similar to what they were probably thinking. And I don’t think having a site name of Nick Exposed worked well in my favor when trying to explain it to my peeps hahaha.
Well needless to say I found a room to shoot in, and pulled off what was probably the most fun of the three to shoot. I tried a few different ideas, but really gravitated to the layers of story in this picture. It makes me snicker when I look at it (YUP I said snicker).
As most of you probably experienced, this project was a tad more difficult then I had originally expected! I mean DAMN I was stuck on each of my quotes for quite a while. One of the traps we can get stuck in as creatives is trying to plan to much, when really action is what promotes creativity. I found that when I just got out there and started shooting, even when going on just a hint of inspiration I came across way more inspiration then I did when sitting at home just pondering on what I think would work for the shot.
Either way it was a FANTASTICLY FUN project to do with you guys, and our hopes is you enjoyed it as much as we did! Thanks to those who submitted these fun and challenging quotes for me to shoot, and to all who submitted and participated in the project. Be on the lookout for the Gallery in the next couple days, as well as a teaser for Shannon and My next collab project that is right around the corner all ready!!
I snickered myself in reading about it. Reminds me a bit of Tom Cruise in that movie…what was the name of it?
Hmmm, not sure if I know which movie your talking about.. but Im glad the post made you snicker haha. Thanks Tisha! Great job on your pics for the project too by the way 🙂
I think I know the movie….is it Risky Business? I can see the connection!
Great shots, Nick! This project was fun, looking forward to participating in future collaborations 🙂
Hey Kelly! Im looking forward to more collabs with you as well. Great shots again by the way. Also could you email me your last name so I can put it in my records. I only have you down as Kelly S. haha
haha… sure I’ll send it!
Yes, Risky Business!
Is that the one where hes sliding around the house in his boxers haha.
Yes, it is!
Simply GREAT, Nick!!! The adequacy of the images to the quotes is remarkable, and the images are fabulous. Fantastic work!!
Thanks Santi! Hope to see you participating in future projects 🙂
Those are awesome! I’m sorry I never submitted any. =/ Honestly, I signed up for it and then finals came around and I had a bunch of other stuff come up so it got pushed to the back burner. Then of course, suddenly the photos were due. I’m sorry, but I can’t wait to see the gallery and hopefully I’ll be able to do the next collab project! I really liked this idea! (:
No worries Heather! Im sorry you missed out on the project but there will be another project right around the corner 🙂 Be sure to follow the Nick Exposed facebook page for more updates 🙂
Really looking forward to the gallery. I missed the start of this one, but will defo be getting involved next time. So much fun.
Absolutely John! Look forward to having you involved in future community projects. Be sure your watching the facebook page for further updates 🙂
Excellent work on all 3 quotes Nick…I agree, the assignment was a lot more difficult than I originally thought it would be. Looking forward to seeing the gallery.
Hey Martin!! Great photos man, Im looking forward to getting the gallery all finished so I can share all of you guys creativity with the rest of the world 🙂 Thanks again
Perfect interpretations of the quotes. 🙂
Thank you Inga 🙂
Wonderful! Love the sailer statue, perfect! Heck, they all are great pictures and go with the quotes superbly. Looking forward to both the gallery and teaser.
Thanks Julz 🙂
The shots and the quotes: You nailed all three. 😀 I can hardly wait to participate in one in the future. But first things first…a deadline on a big project nearing completion. 😀
Thanks Shez 🙂 Completing projects is always a great feeling! Although I love my design work, I love even more so finishing the project and seeing it in its completed state. And I too look forward to having you apart of our future projects!!
I see what you mean on the Seaman statue. The enlarged version oif the shot shows so much texture and character. Very apropo (sure I hoped I spelled that right. It really shows one’s ignorance to use a word one can’t spell. 🙂 )
Hahaha good point. Thanks Fay 🙂
Excellent article/post and images … a delight to read. I missed the project but it sounds fascinating. Did you ask readers to submit quotes and then you shot images to fit the theme of the quote? Great idea!
Hey Mona! Yea that’s exactly it. We had 35 creatives involved in the project. Each submitted their 3 favorite quotes which were then divvied up across the board so the each was shooting 3 new quotes.
Well, I must pay attention the next time. It seems like a fun, yet challenging, creative project.
Fantastic group Nick, I like the way you think
Haha thanks Rob! I enjoyed your shots as well and am trying my hardest to get the gallery up and running ASAP to share everyone’s creativity with the world 🙂
I can’t wait to see what people came up with for mine.
Agreed 🙂 Even though I have already seen… I still agree hahaha
