Mystery of the Sandals
Its been a while since I’ve posted a black and white street shot, as most of my attention lately has been on certain color palettes. Well I finally came across a shot where I thought a black and white would do it most justice and here it is.
I had originally intended to post some film shots I had taken within the last week, however for whatever reason they didn’t copy to my computer properly and I sent the cd with the originals on it off with my friend who I have been letting use my old AE-1 in our recent shots. So until the return of the cd and pics…
I loved the layers of this scene as I approached, with what seems to be a student working on an assignment or maybe an artist plotting out an idea intensely working on what he’s doing while the two beside him look off into the distance. Then there is the mystery of the sandals left behind by what could be a friend.. or maybe even a complete stranger. Either way the owner left them behind. Was it due to the crazy footwork they would need in the near future or the sudden excitement of running free without the restraints of flip flops or footwear in general. Either way there is a story to the missing person, just as much as there is a story to those who are still present. And of course how could I pass up shooting the fedora and matching vest… my kind of style right there 🙂
I really like this photo!
Hey thanks Marlan 🙂
Whose could they be?! 🙂
Haha exactly Richard! Oh what a mystery 🙂
That’s what I love about candid shots. SO much can be read into them.
Exactly 🙂 Thanks again Richard
great intrigue
Thanks Rob 🙂
or: how the invisible man fights cold feet 😉
Hahaha great point Alessandro 🙂
Darn, Alessandro beat me to it, except I was going to say the naked invisible man! LOL
Get your mind out of the gutter Cindy! Haha, I love the idea of the invisible man 🙂
Fantastic shot and great story!!! I love how it leaves an open lecture to the imagination!! 🙂
Agreed Santi! I love when I can play out a bit of mystery in my photos 🙂
The story that goes with the shot and composition of it are great. I haven’t gone done the road of street photography much but your work and the way you intertwine it with a story is fantastic. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Lama (I still haven’t been able to figure out your real name 😉 ). Street photography is a great deal of fun, and really teaches you to be on the prowl for interesting gesture and scenes. Thanks for the kind words my friend
Ahhh – my bad it’s Justin. Keep up the good work Nick!
Mystery of the Lama has been solved haha. Thanks Justin 🙂
I like this, and as you said, there are several separate layers of interest.
Well Seen and captured
Hey thanks Arbib 🙂 I appreciate the kind words!
It’s pretty obvious Nick, the sandals are spares for the sandals the guy in the foreground is wearing. 🙂
Hahah, Oh yes obviously.. how could I have missed that 🙂 Thanks Matt, always enjoy reading your comments!
Likewise to your posts. 🙂
Succinct and to the point.

Thanks Cornelia!! Coming from you (probably my favorite street photographer to follow on wordpress) it is very humbling.
Haha, well spotted. Love the photo.
Hey thanks Kyra 🙂
Love the photo and the story.. I am wondering if the one farthest away from the camera is broken?? Who knows but an intriguing shot indeed.
All part of the Mystery I guess haha 🙂 Thanks
