Success!
“Deadly Stare”
As most of you know, I purchased an old Canon AE-1 a few weeks ago, only to find that it leaked light worse than the faucet at my place back in Virginia… and trust me that damn faucet leaked water like it was going out of style. Last week I took the time to go through and replace all the seals, and have been shooting a few scenes here and there with it anticipating the outcome. Well, today I finished off the role, got it developed and as the title of the post suggests the repair was a success!!
I absolutely love having this camera with me to shoot on occasion being it brings a completely different feel to my street shots. I shoot with a Canon 50mm which forces me to get even closer than I would have to with the 50 I use on my crop censored 550D. Its a completely different experience not knowing how the resulting image will turn out, and having to crank the film each time. Its strangely relaxing actually, as Im not machine gunning through brackets of various exposures. I cant wait to get this camera figured out, and continue to do some random shooting with it.

Nice work Nick. Making me want to take the good old Sears 35mm out and about.
Thanks man! Do it up!
Congrats! I know what that’s like. I have a Nikon D300 with a serious problem allowing dust onto the filter. Thinking of switching to Canon because of it. Fixing your camera is like getting an old friend back.
Absolutely, except mine was like being reunited with a new friend. Haha. Thanks Bill
Love the last pic. Makes me want to know what he’s staring at.
Me too Jeanne ๐
What, you don’t know?!
Haha I will leave it a mystery ๐
Nice shots! I have a Canon AE-1. Haven’t shot with it in years? Hummmโฆ
thanks for the inspiration.
Get out there and shoot with er’ Laura ๐
First, dig out of the closet! Thanks ๐ Nick
Let me know when you do find and shoot with it ๐
That inspires me to start using film again. Awesome post!
It’s so much fun, as you probably know ๐ Completely different experience
Wow, these are just great! I think I’ll dig out my old Pentax K1000. Yeah, I’d like to know what he’s staring at, too. I think you should write a mystery novel ๐
Hey Gina, Great idea get the Pentax out! Be sure to share you results when you get them developed. And I don’t know about writing a mystery novel haha… ๐
The shot captioned ‘Waiting’ reminds me of design school, toting home-work pieces and a toolbox every day. Showing my age… Nice shots though. =)
Thanks Dana! I wish I had stories from a design school ๐ Instead my design school is Google Search Engine haha. All self taught
You know, college credits and a Photoshop class, do not a good designer make. =) Don’t get me wrong, I am very thankful for my time in school. I’m a better designer for having been there. But I’ve met some great people in the industry that never went to school, but have incredible skills! College is good. But its not the end all be all listing on a resume! Keep up the good work, Nick.
Thanks Dana ๐
Nice! What film produced such bright colors? Fuji?
Think you can fix the light meter on my Minolta 102?
๐
Hey Shez! Yea this roll was Fujicolor Superia 400, and it depends on the light meter. I will give anything a shot, I just can’t guarantee I will be able to fix it… or return it in any kind of working condition for that matter haha.
Awww thanks. I have skills equal to “can’t guarantee” and I have tools. I also have a light meter and a new film camera. At this point it is nostalgic only. But the internet was not the awesome tool back then it is now. Bet we could locate a new or refurbished meter for that model.
Check out my Concept car post from yesterday.
Can you post the link here, I cant seem to find it. Thanks ๐
Since you are into cars, I thought you would enjoy seeing this one. Here’s the link only I think you will have to copy paste since I can’t see a way to create a link here. http://wp.me/p26SoR-da
Thanks Shez ๐
Some more really nice shots. Particularly like the last one – great composition.
Thanks Richard ๐
Great shots! ๐
Thanks Sonel ๐
Very nicely seen pictures – particularly the last one. I spent the years from 1968 to 2000 professionally working with every format of film camera and I have to say that I’m really enjoying digital – I can do without the suspense of knowing what’s gone wrong in the camera or the lab and I don’t have to look at the humungus film purchase and processing bills!
Hey Roger! I absolutely love shooting digital as well, but I still like to switch it up a bit with the mystery of film ๐
Nick,
nice pictures, no matter the light leaking ๐
C
Thanks Carlo! Yea thankfully I cured all the light leaks, when I first got the camera it was so bad it was destroying the film haha.
Wow … That took me to times and places so distant and far .. I remember the anticipation and hat was a pleasure of its own and sometimes even failure feels good … My be i should find one like this …
Hey Tarek! Yea theres been a lot of failure between me and film! But its fun to have to fight for the art form every now and then ๐ And yes you should definitely track down another film cam, its fun to break away from the comforts of digital every now and then.
I used to shoot with an old Canon TX manual focus SLR (50mm) that belonged to my father, until this year that I bought a DSLR, (which I still have to figure out), due to the fact that I couldnยดt find the battery that I need to power the meter of my old camera. For me, it was always very exciting and kind of magical to develop my films, make my contact sheets and the photos by myself at the laboratory of my high school and afterwards at my university. I miss those days!
Sounds like fun times Marianne ๐ Thanks for the comment!
I bought An AE-1 thirty years ago and loved it. These shots are great. Hope you keep the camera.
Oh I will definitely keep the camera! I shoot with it off and on, but its always in my bag just in case ๐
