“What uses having a great depth of field, if there is not an adequate depth of feeling?”
“I am always torn between the attitude of the journalist, who is a recorder of facts, and the artist, who is often necessarily at odds with the facts. My principle concern is for honesty, above all honesty with myself… ”
“With considerable soul searching, that to the utmost of my ability, I have let truth be the prejudice.”

Great quotes!! As always thanks for sharing your knowledge Dave š I enjoy our conversations, I dont know if its the teacher in you but Im always learning something new from ya.
Actually, it was you and your contest that got me thinking about Smith’s vision for truth. I noticed how many posts mentioned beauty. But historically, many photographers have had a vison for truth as well. Photographers like Dorothea Lange portrayed the homeless of the Great Depression with honesty and dignity. And later photographers like Smith, Robert Capa and Edward Steichen risked their lives to express the ugly truth about war. And where would we be without their photographs that defined their times and still stir the social consciences of millins? The interesting thing to me is that they all pursued both beauty and truth in their work. Maybe we do, too, only in our times of prosperity and peace it is beauty that is foremost on our minds. Maybe in future times of social upheaval we will all shift our focus to the needs of the times, like others of the past.
Good stuff!
The “truth” is, I’m an old guy and talk too much.
Its not the older generation talking to much thats an issue, its the younger generation not listening enough lol. However Im not saying your talking to much or part of the “old people” lol.
