YIELD. What a strange word. Im not sure if I’ve ever heard it used any where other than these signs. It can be a bit confusing at times, its not quit stop.. but not quit go either. Maybe thats why from my experience most people just ignore them and drive right on through. We obviously know the sign and what it means, however we often don’t give it much attention. It asks us to slow down and observe our surroundings before moving forward, yet were often to busy with our lives that we give it a quick “eh thats good enough” adjustment of our speed and keep on going.

This happens often in other areas of our lives as well, we get thrown a “Yield Signs” at various times and just keep on going. Life try’s to get us to slow down and appreciate and observe the surrounding, the moment, the now. But we are in such a hurry to get on with life, so we completely blow by the “sign” an give that “eh, good enough”. When we do that, we miss out on the beauties the world has to offer on a daily basis.

I love the simplicity of this photo, with just 3 key elements, as well as the bold red that contrasts the whole scene just beautifully. This is right at the corner of my block, and the snow has really just really helped to add magic to everything around. Its been so wonderful being able to capture some of it through the lens!

What a wonderful post.. I love the simplicity of your words and the image. We don’t have “yield” signs in Australia… we “give way”… and you are right… people don’t slow down for them here either.

    • Tracie, hey thanks for sharing about the “Give Way”, thats so interesting. Is that an actual sign, or is it a general rule that you guys are suppose to abide by? Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. Well said! I think we do need to start listening to the “signs” because life seems to be going at warp speed lately!

  3. Thanks for the follow! I’ve just added you to my bloglovin list πŸ™‚

Wow I love that photo – the red just stands out against the snow. It’s very simple and effective. I’m trying to learn how to use my camera, so I will be following your posts and hopefully picking up some ideas/tips along the way.

    • Hey Louise! Thanks for the kind words. As my blog develops and grows over the year there will be many tips and ideas along the way for you to enjoy. And as always feel free to reach out at any point with questions πŸ™‚

  4. Beautiful composition, both with image and words. This winter has been negligent in coming to Indiana (where I live) with only a few teasing moments. I miss the beauty that snow brings to an otherwise barren landscape. Thanks for the post and the thoughts.

    • Thanks for your kind words Dezra! What a bummer not having snow. It looks like were going to have a good amount come in the week. Hopefully you guys will catch at least the tail end of our storm. Haha

  5. Great photography you’ve got here! I’ve added you to my blogroll!

  6. Hello Nick, just a little note to say thanks for following us and liking our posts.
We just started and we are still figuring out wordpress. At least this way we can say thanks:)

  7. We have Give Way signs here too. When I lived in the States I always though the Yield signs were weird… who knows what yield means? Your post immediately made me think of Pearl Jam πŸ™‚

    • Haha Janette, I didn’t even think of Pearl Jam when I was posting that, but now that you say that I see the resemblance, especially with their cover art for the album. Thanks

  8. incredible shot! I’m really inspired by all of your photography, it’s really motivated me to keep shooting and keep my eyes peeled for any unnoticed or hidden beauty that might just be near by me (and not underestimate my phone camera, as well) thank you πŸ™‚

ps: do you have an about me page?

    • Thank you so much for your comment. I love hearing that someone has found inspiration in my art! As far as an about page, I am still working on improving the site, and haven’t gotten to that part yet. It will be coming soon though, that way you guys can learn all about the man, the myth, and the creative πŸ™‚

  9. I know this one as “give way”… but the shape of the sign is the same.
The monochromatic effect that the snow gives, enhances this photo… makes you almost think it’s a black and white image where a spot of colour has been added.

“Give way” for me means to me as a driver that I need to slow down and be ready to stop and give way to other traffic there is any. Sometime there is no traffic anyway … so stopping isn’t always necessary but you need to be ready to just in case. (just like many other situations in life).

Great image and thoughts. In a fast paced world of smash and grab, it’s good advice.

  11. Very nicely done. I love your cutting of the frame with the telephone pole and wire to isolate the sign. I also enjoy the contrasts of textures and colors. Finally, your editting is very well done – its all too easy to go overboard, especially with the vinette… Thank you for posting!
