Authentically ME!!

“When you are real in your music, people know it and they feel your authenticity.” -Wynonna Judd

Your different then every other person on the planet, thats the obvious part. The not so obvious part is that’s a great thing! Far to often we look at this like its some sort of flaw, like we need to be exactly like everyone else. Otherwise we wont fit in, or we wont be thought of as cool, smart, talented, sexy. BULLSHIT! It is our uniqueness and authenticity that draws people in. It is our bold self expression that makes us cool and trendy. There is no cool in conforming with others, it waters us down and dilutes our true self to a dull photo copied version of someone else, then you wander around trying to fit in then trying to fit in and then trying to fit in. Its a never ending cycle of you molding yourself to fit into someone else’s life.

“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” -Herman Melville

We get caught up to much in what others think. Honestly it causes un-needed stress in your life trying to live up to other peoples standards for who they think you should be. Here’s a tip… Most of the time they have no clue who they’re suppose to be let alone who you should be. So many people wander around aimlessly not knowing their true selves because they’re to busy trying to be someone else.

Now, Im not saying all imitation is a bad thing. Were often told to stand on the shoulders of Giants.Β Some of the best ideas were built off the ideas of others, but they were only improved upon by adding an extra dash the special ingredient… originality. To imitate something and improve upon the idea in your own way is no longer imitation, but authenticity and originality.

“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” ~Oprah Winfrey

So the big question is how do you take the step to becoming the authentic version of yourself? Refuse to do things just to please others, do things because it makes you happy. Do things because it brings you closer to the best-version-of-yourself. And the beauty is you’ll attract valuable people to your life by doing this.Β I don’t post in my blog to please others, although I do hope you find value in my thoughts and creativity. I don’t sing out loud in the car and shower to please those who can hear me, and I assure you they probably aren’t to pleased. I do these things for my own pleasure. I do these things to develop myself towards my current goals and aspirations. I do these things because I am Authentically ME!!!

Won’t ya join me… by being YOU!

Was having a crap day – your blog just made me pull myself together – even if it means I can be authentically miserable! The picture of the Dodge rocks. Thanks Nick.

  3. Hi, Nick. I am looking forward to exploring your blog. Thanks for subscribing to Source of Inspiration and leaving bread crumbs so I could find you. Hugs, pat

  4. When you know yourself, you know what your good at and what you like. This gives you the confidence to be successful. Your blog was the catalyst for that parable.

    • Kila, hey man! Im glad you seen some value in my words. Its true when your authentic you do have the confidence and self knowledge to get you where you want to go. Stephen Covey used to say that people were so quick to climb up the ladder of success that they forget to make sure their ladder was against the right wall. The only way to know this is like you said to know yourself, what your good at and what you like. Thanks for the comment Kila.

  7. Hi Nick,
Very cool words and cool blog.
I’ve always been the square peg in the round hole and the person in the group who thought outside the box. It’s a trait I see too, in many fellow creatives…
It’s never made me win any popularity contests and it was really tough when I was a teenager but the older I get the more I value “me being me” and being true to my values and true to myself.
Luckily I have some good friends who appreciate me for what I am and visa versa, and who knows, together one day we may change the world. I’m interested in the “bigger picture”of life, of not just taking but also giving back, to making a difference in the little stuff as well as in the big stuff. Raising a family and living in today’s material world it’s often easier said than done.
I’d rather that my ethics with people be right than the brand tags on anything we own.
Needless to say I love this post.
I’m looking forward to reading more of your blog too…

    • Wonderful reply Kiwi! You sound like a truly extraordinary human being! I agree there seems to be a link between creatives and smiling and laughter. We see things in a different light then most! Its actually a topic I plan to speak to youth about throughout the year, the power of creativity and seeing the world in a different light. But back to your reply, The beauty of being true to yourself, isn’t popularity contests like you mentioned, its finding true friends that enable you to be you. You guys build upon each others strengths and I agree together you can change the world πŸ˜‰ Having a few select true friends is better than any hundreds of artificial friends! Thanks again for your lovely response!
