5 New Years Resolutions for Photographers in 2013

New Years Photography Resolutions

Hokey Petes!! Its that time of year once again!!

With 2012 coming to its pleasant end, and the new year rapidly approaching, its time to sit back and ponder on our goals and visions for the upcoming rotations around the sun (which coincidentally translates to resolutions for the upcoming revolutions lolz).

Now, I know what your saying… “But Big Daddy Nick, goal setting is boring and daunting, and and…”. Au contraire mon ami!! Goals can be super fun when connected to something we love, ie. photography… or ice cream, boy do I love ice cream, but that typically goes against our other resolutions. So, whether your full on professional, amateur or a hobbyist, setting goals for your photography can take your craft, art or whatever you want to call it, to the next level in the coming 12 months and beyond!

To help you get started, Ive put together 5 areas that have helped me drastically improve my photography over the last year, which can be adopted into your goals for 2013.

1. Learn Your Gear

If you haven’t done so already, make it a point this year to take your camera off of the Auto and Program modes, and really take some time to learn how your camera works. To make the transition relatively easy, I suggest starting off in Aperture Priority Mode (Often marked as AV on your controls dial at the top of your cam), this allows you to control your depth of field (more on these topics to come in future months), while the camera still makes the rest of the decisions for you.

Learn about the different metering and focusing modes your camera sports; what each one does, and which is right for the photography you do.

Once you learn the manual controls, functions and dynamics of your camera, you will find yourself in a whole new world of creative expression. The goal here is to know your camera gear inside and out; what each button and function does, and master it to the point that you can make decisions and changes on the fly without even pulling the camera away from your face. So often we’re trying to upgrade to that next camera, that new lens, a different flash or whatever, before we even have the gear we’re currently working with figured out. Put off buying new gear, and master the stuff thats already in your hand.

2. Practice the Technicals

Similar to numero uno (Dang Son, were droppin some multi-lingual bombs today!!), take the time to learn the technical aspects of this wonderful art we call photography.

Do you know how to get a proper exposure, or even what exposure is? What part of the day has the best light for shooting? What does good light look like? What the heck was Nick talking about when he said Depth of Field?!?!

Once you get your camera down pat, its time to put it into practice and start focusing on the technical aspects of photo taking. Just knowing how to work our cameras, doesn’t promise us that our photos will be worth a darn. Learning things like exposure, composition and how to see light will help take our photos to that next level.

3. Shoot More

Its like Harrison Ford says in the latest Indiana Jones movie “If you want to be a good archeologist, you gotta get out of the library”. The only way to practice any of this is to get out there with camera in hand!

Watch out cause Im about to lay down some heavy philosophy right now… you ready for this?! Heres lifes formula for success: Go out, make mistakes, learn from your mistakes, wash, rinse, repeat!!

The only way to improve in this game is to be out there shooting, clicking that shutter, burnin them pixels! You’ve gotta be willing to FAIL (gasp.. the F word). Photography aint rocket science, but at the same time its no cake walk either. Theres a lot of trial and error, meaning it takes 1 part trial and 1 part error to get you to that next level. Embrace failure and keep on shooting.

Make it a habit to take your camera with you and shoot wherever you go. Now days this is simple, as most of us have phones in our pockets at all times that rival some of todays point and shoots. Be on the prowl for good light, interesting compositions and perspectives. Shoot color, light, gesture any chance you can. Shoot Shoot Shoot!

4. Shoot Less

Wha What!?!?!? Now your just being confusing!

Since the release of the digital age, theres a nasty term in photography called “Spray and Pray”. This refers to just shooting anything and everything in hopes that one of the shots will be a keeper. Now days pixels are free, and its easy to just run around clicking that shutter at everything that moves, capturing the same scene a hundred times, hoping to get a keeper or two. DONT BE THAT PHOTOGRAPHER!

Slow down and think about your shots before pulling that trigger! Its like legendary photog Jay Maisel has said “Look at what your looking at”, meaning actually observe whats in front of your lens. Take time to line your shot up, get the right perspective, wait for the decisive moment… theeeennnn hit the shutter. Learning to see The Shot is one of the most rewarding skills you can hone when it comes to your photography. Its what sets stunning photos apart from the rest.

Not to mention you will love yourself that much more when you don’t have a billion and a half of the same photo to edit and sort through at the end of the day.

5. Get out of your Comfort Zone

If you only take one thing from this post, let it be this! Id say one of my biggest gifts in life, has always been my willingness and excitement towards constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I can attribute all the victories I’ve ever experienced to this simple idea.

Make it a goal in 2013 to push your photographic boundaries. Get out there and scare your self shitless over and over, and I guarantee you, at the end of the year you’ll look back in amazement at how far you’ve come.

Try a few of these things to help burst that initial comfort zone bubble

  • Go out and meet other photographers in your area, and ask them to shoot with you.
  • Reach out to a photographer you admire and ask them to critique your work.
  • Shoot people you don’t know (with your camera, ya psycho). Try doing a street portrait series, or even just some street photography if thats to big of a jump at first.
  • Submit photos to a photography competition.
  • Reach out to multiple photographers to do a personal collaboration.
  • Reach out and see if you can second shoot or assist for one of the top photogs in your town.
  • Shoot in MANUAL mode!! (Going back to number 1, I know it can be scary at first).
  • Try new photography styles, like flash photography, sports photography, landscape, concert, etc.
  • Shoot a couple rolls of film. You cant keep chimping at the back of the camera when theres no screen. This will force you to learn your settings and work in a fully manual mode.
  • Take a new photographer under your wing. They say one of the best ways to learn is to teach.

So there you have it!! 5 quick ideas to get you rolling into setting goals for the new year.

Now I want to hear your thoughts!! What goals have you set already? What were the biggest growing points of your photography in 2012? Share your comments below.

Community Collab Project :: August

Once upon a time, in a far away land (called the Interwebs), there was a magical camera.  For years, this magical camera brought joy to millions by capturing moments and memories.  The camera thrived, it’s days full of smiles and cheese…or at least, people talking about cheese which subsequently…mysteriously…made them smile!  It was a happy time in the Interwebs…until a shadow fell over the land.

Slowly but surely, the camera began having difficulties.  Basic compositions were hard to think through.  ISO’s and Time values became mind-boggling concepts.  The camera was in a fog.  Everything he tried felt flat and colorless…and the camera checked…he wasn’t set for monochromes!  What the magical picture-maker needed was some inspiration…  a “Creative Challenge”, so to speak.

Just as the camera came to that realization, a knight in shining armor raced up.  “Camera!  Thou art in a creative rut!  But fear not, a solution hath arrived.”  The knight proceeded to tell the camera (and, due to his lack of volume control, most of the Interwebs) about this month’s Collaborative Creative Challenge hosted by Sir Nick Exposed and the fair maiden Seeing Spots Photography.  Talk about impeccable timing!

Free Retro Lightroom Preset

If you recall back in June, I posted this “Roadside Chevy” pic, with a “retro” edit (You can read more about it in the original post HERE).

Well, since then I’ve reorganized my lightroom catalogs and unfortunately lost all my previous edits :/ . But… not before saving the settings used in this shot as a preset!! Continue reading

Updates for ya’ll

Wow!! What an incredible summer it has been so far!

I want to start off by giving a big shout out to all of you who participated in last months Community Collab Project! If you didnt see already, the gallery is up and ready to be enjoyed HERE. This months project is going to be absolutely KILLER!!! An enormous thank you to our amazing co-host Shannon Kalahan from Seeing Spots Photography, for coming up with the insanely creative idea! Im seriously on the edge of my seat right now, because I want to clue you guys in on the awesomeness that is to come in this months CCP! (BTW if you havent liked her facebook page yet… well you better do so HERE)

Now, where to start for the rest of the updates… First of all I regret to say, I will be putting the 365 project on hold for the time being. With my increasingly hectic schedule I just don’t have the time or energy to put into the challenge like I did earlier this year. BUT DONT WORRY, this is not to say I wont be shooting anymore! Au contraire,  I will continue to shoot as often as I can, and will do my best to bring you the best of the best from my shooting :) Let alone the awesome shots I can bring you from my professional shoots like these. Silhouette Collaboration Galleries!!

What another AMAZING Collaboration!!

We cant express enough, how much we love and appreciate all of your participation in these projects month after month! Personally, I love watching everyone grow in both creativity and in their photographic skills with each new project.

We’re always excited to hear you feedback!! Each project is uniques to each individual creative. In some cases some with excel while others may struggle; some have experienced the topic hundreds of times, others it could be there first time even hearing about it. The beautiful thing is, its not a contest. There is no right or wrong way to go about it all. Our objective for these projects is to continue to provide FUN (and hopefully exciting) opportunities to continue to grow creatively as well as help you pick up a new (or dust off an old) skill or technique along the way. Barn Yard Bicycle

My search for interesting bikes has continued, and this time brought me to a rather interesting placement of this fully painted purple cruiser, complete with multiple wicker baskets!

I always love when multiple interests collide in front of my lens. Obviously, I’ve developed a mild obsession with photographing bikes, but have always had an interest in them, since I was first able to ride with training wheels and all. Another interest Ive mentioned in posts before is the beauty of barns, red ones specifically. So imagine my delight when I came across this scene, with two passions converging into one, slightly chaotic yet beautiful, display. Personally I could have done without the overgrowing vegetation, but wasnt about to start ripping someones plants out for the sake of a shot (doesn’t mean it didnt cross my mind however ;) )

On a side note: Earlier today I was sitting, quietly pondering on my obsession (and I mean OBSESSION) with photography. Its incredible that it has already been 7 months of shooting, yet Im still as (if not more) excited about learning and applying as I was the day I picked up the cam for the first time! As I look back on all the places my various forms of cameras have taken me over the last 7 months, I cant help but smile, knowing this is only the beginning of something truly remarkable that is still unraveling as I continue to trek forward in this great adventure.

Everything from the wonderful Nick Exposed community, the monthly community projects (Which by the way if you missed the announcement of this months project its not to late to get in on the fun!! Check it out HERE), the exciting photo gigs and creative shoots Ive been landing lately, the incredible friendships and network within the community, and everything else that I cant think of in my insanely tired state right now (Played some very intense games of Beach Volleyball today, in some very intense sun and heat).

Thank you to all who have been following and supporting the process of both my own photographic growth, as well as the growth of this awesome photog creative community!! You Guys Rock!!

Oh btw, if you havent checked out the Nick Exposed Facebook Page just yet, you may want to do so and start following soon! Word on the street is theres going to be a pretty kick ass giveaway coming up in the next week or so :D

Stacked

Its incredible how life tends to intertwine and overlap itself!

At church tonight, we were going over perspective, and how just a simple shift can make all the difference in our lives and in our faith. Well, on the way home I decided to take a bit of a scenic route, being I had the cam with me. I had always seen these rocks stacked in the yard of a house down this particular way home, and Ive been telling myself I need to get out here to shoot them for the blog. I had driven by them many times in the past, and never noticed the wagon wheels that surrounded this rock garden until today. Continue reading

Against the Wall

Im still alive!! haha

It feels so good to be back posting shots again!! Ive been shooting a lot lately, but most of my digital work has been client projects and shoots leaving little to be shared with you guys due to privacy contracts and all that jazz. I did however do a shoot with a father & daughter illusionist team last week for their new autograph material. I will be finishing up final edits this week and will be able to share images when thats finished. Other than that most of my personal photo workflow has been on film. If you’ve been watching the Nick Exposed Facebook Page, you probably seen that I recently got my hands on an old Canonet QL17 rangefinder that has been a blast to shoot with. Once I get the 10+ rolls of film I have lying around developed Ill have plenty to share with you guys :)

Today, however, I went out shooting digital downtown, surprisingly in a section I had yet to explore. Theres not to many areas downtown I haven’t trekked through with camera in hand, but its always fun to run across something Ive missed in the past. As I ventured through the alley ways behind a string of shops, delis and rundown warehouses I came across this parking area containing this scooter. Although I did love the sleek clean red lines of this scooter juxtaposed against the grungy multi-textured wall, I think the piece that got me was the single vibrant yellow line dead center of the scene. Unfortunately there was no blue to be had in this one, otherwise I would have had another addition to my ongoing primary color series, but Im happy with it either way.

Community Collaborative Project::July

YAY!!

Our awesome co-host Shannon just released the details for this months community collaboration on the Seeing Spots Photo site, and I gotta say Im super excited for this project! Ive included an excerpt below.

HEY CREATIVES!!  IT’S THAT TIME OF THE MONTH!

Ummm…wait…that came out wrong.  What I meant to say is that it’s time to announce the details on this month’s Community Collaboration Project (CCP for those of you who are hip to acronyms and initialisms).

But First!!

Before we spill the beans about this month’s skill set project, we wanted to give a RIDICULOUSLY LOUD, GINORMOUSLY HUGE thank you to all who have participated in our last couple projects!!  Did we mention we had over 100 images submitted to our Scavenger Hunt??  OVER 100!!  Seriously, give yourselves a round of applause.  I mean, think about it…you took on an ambitious project, rocked it full of creativity, and throughout it all, you continued to make new friends (*cough network cough*) all while becoming stronger photographers.  That’s like a win-win-win…um…win.  Or a win x 4.  Or a win to the 4th degree?

Anyway, we are so appreciative to have you all on board for these educational, yet fun community projects.  Without all of your continued support, well…there would be a win to the zero power. haha

We look forward to continuing to make these projects bigger and better in order to consistently stretch your creative imagination and skill sets.  So…um…keep spreading the word, mmmkay? ;-)

Okay, now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. <insert drum roll, please>

If you’ve been following along on our Facebook and Twitter pages (which is where a lot of the day to day details of these projects get posted.  So, you might want to subscribe.  Just saying!) then you know we asked for suggestions on what YOU GUYS wanted to practice.  After all, we’re here for you!  We mulled over the recommendations we got back, and decided that this month’s skill set would be……..

OH Cliff Hanger!!… Find out what this months topic is over on Shannon’s Blog HERE

Scavenger Hunt Collab Galleries

Wahoo!!

Thanks to everyone who participated, we had over 100 submissions for Junes Scavenger Hunt Photography Collab!! That makes this the biggest collab Shannon and I have hosted yet, with over twice as many photo submissions as last month!

Its awesome to see the wide range of thinking on this project, and how each person captured the subject in such wildly different, and in some cases wildly similar ways! Your creativity never ceases to amaze us on these projects, and it excites us to continue hosting these each month!! Continue reading

The Performing Spirit

“Another Rising Star”

This little series speaks for itself with more shots of the local busking performers. But what I will say is, How cute is the kid above?!?!?! He was sporting his own little electric guitar during last Wednesdays Blues on the Mall performance, and I just had to get around to posting this pic. No rules saying I couldn’t do two rising star pics for the collab haha :)

Transporting Character

“The Elegant 3speed”

I’ve been thinking a lot lately, on the possibility of putting together a coffee table book of my bike shots eventually. Naturally when thinking about this you start gravitating towards more and more bike scenes to be able to choose from when that day comes.

With gas prices where they are these days, biking has become a very comfortable solution for so many traveling around town (not to mention the free parking as well!!). This gives photographers like myself plenty to choose from when looking for a good subject… I try to find bikes with character. Bikes that have a story to tell, or an adventure that is obviously worth living.

Unfortunately so many bikes are lifeless, missing the sense of elegance, mystery and pizzazz that others contain between their two wheels. In a way they are much like humans, some are out there living life, encountering adventure after adventure. While others are simply spinning their wheels going through the motions. This could be why I’m drawn to bikes so much, they are relate-able. They all have the potential to go to the same places, yet only a few do. Some acquire punctured tires, broken sprockets, bent handle bars on the exciting journeys they live out. Others let their chain rust, tires weather and gears go untouched as they sit in the comfort of their shelter.

Let me be like the adventure driven cycle!! If a path isnt available, ill risk a tire or two to make one appear!
